What’s the easiest way to capture a college coach’s attention and get recruited? Simple: be a god at baseball. That’s the most straightforward answer AND there are kids that fall into that category, Their recruiting process will be a breeze with the highest caliber of schools lining up for them.

Ok, but the majority of us don’t throw 95 MPH from the bump or can hit the ball with the exit velo of a young Bryce Harper. But just because that level of skill isn’t in the cards YET, doesn’t mean the recruiting process has to be tumultuous.

So what’s the NEXT easiest way to get a college coach’s attention?

Check off the physical metrics. What does that mean? Have an exit velo over 90, throw 90 off the bump, run a 6.8 60-yard dash, and throw 90 from the outfield or across the diamond. Any coach will take a chance on a kid with the physicality to play at the college level, because the coach knows they can develop the baseball skill side. Trust me, I’ve seen a lot of players in my days with high level tools, or physicality that weren’t extremely skilled baseball players who played at the college level and beyond.

I say that very casually, like it is easy to achieve, but that is exactly my point. The best part is that these metrics are 100% attainable. It just takes consistency. Relentless consistency. And if you can’t remain consistent, frankly, you won’t last at the next level.

These metrics are important, because high school stats aren’t comparable. Stealing 20 bags in a high school season might be easier in one state versus another state based on the level of competition that season. But a 6.8 60-yard dash is an indisputable fact, and comparable for all players. In my experience, I saw a player commit to a D1 school because he ran 6.4 in the 60, but he never played an out of varsity high school baseball. TRUE STORY.

If you aren’t achieving at least one of these physical metrics, you’re wasting your time reaching out to any D1 school, and high level D2 and D3 schools. I know from experience. I emailed every school I could find, but the recruiting trail didn’t heat up until I started running a 6.8 60.
